You might want to look at the Mineral King 1 photo set for a general introduction to the area.

Gypsy and I went up July 18-21 and had a really good time. Our first full day consisted of a 10 mile hike (round trip) to Eagle and Mosquito Lakes. We intended to go to Eagle Lake only, but Mosquito Lake turned out to be a do-able side trip on our way back, so we went for it. Eagle Lake was beautiful, of course, and during our stay we shoo-ed a marmot away from a fisherman's backpack that it was attempting to drag away -- the fisherman was on the other side of the lake and oblivious. Our hike was just the right distance, so that when we finished we were tired, but still had time to go get a shower and a hamburger at the Silver City Store before it closed, a few miles down the road.

On our second, and last full day in the sequoias, we decided we'd had enough hiking, and that we'd go check out the Giant Forest/Lodgepole area -- the much more popular and well traveled area of the park. Most of the famous sequoias are there, including the General Sherman tree (largest living thing on Earth) and others. Lodgepole consists of a large, fully-equipped campground, a large store and a large quantity of people. We're glad we didn't camp there.

Anyway, at least a month has passed since we went on this trip so I'm probably forgetting a lot of the details, but oh well, it makes for better reading...

To sum it up: we like Mineral King.
